KT Tunstall Diary

What a marvellous ride. Second tour and i really feel we’ve come back a different band – certainly the fact that i sound like I’ve been smoking for 75 years.
It was actually a serendipitous arse up at Cambridge which changed things. (Really sorry people had to wait outside like that, if there was anything i could’ve done I would have done it) Due to them having to bring in a new PA, there wasn’t enough channels for my electric guitar, so i did the whole thing acoustic and the guys sang alot less, and by stripping the sound down it suddenly made more sense and found more soul. But certainly not to detract from the shows in Edinburgh & St.Andrews, all of them just felt soooo good. It’s finally sounding like i’ve always hoped it would. Vibey, immediate, proper. Nngh!!

Gutted about Oxford. But every time i sang i could feel the strain stretching further…Even more annoying was that i got ill the day of rehearsals – it wasn’t even tour debauchery that invited the bacteria to stay for a week. Bloody dull.

So, my memories…Playing Throw Me A rope to 500 silent people in Edinburgh. Moved me so much. All those lovely familiar faces in the crowd at St.Andrews(and I mean familiar for over 2 decades!). The amazing electric atmosphere in Cambridge where people were close enough to catch my lurgy. And telling the crowd in Manchester that i was about to show them my ‘chinese box’. Didn’t quite think that one through.

Album’s out in 2 weeks!! Most curious to know what you’ll think. Either way, musical judgement day beckons and I’m good and ready to meet my album-buying maker. Come ooooon!!!!!

WILL SHE DO IT?!! Can the Tunstall pull it off, sitting in her pyjamas feeling decidedly ropey, will she manage to pull it out the bag in 22 hours time to shake the roof off the north….

I’m not a gambling girl by nature, but bets on i can do it. There’s nowt wrong with sounding like Bonnie Tyler anyway.

This next song is called ‘Total Eclipse of my Lungs on an X-ray Due to Phlegm’. Nice.

Legwarmers. It’s all in the legwarmers. Bring me strength oh little tubes of woolly magic. I think I’d better go back to bed.

Sometimes, you are posed with a challenge that feels a little, lets say, deliberate. I’m about to embark on a KICKass tour, and the big, lergy infected hand of destiny deals me an overflowing dose of bacteria, and i am SICK dammit. Fortunately, it’s not a joint-cruncher flu (never had the flu actually. sounds grim. Don’t want it.), so i’m preparing for battle.

I might sound like Bonnie Tyler. I can only hope for such glory. But isn’t it boring when you go to a gig and the singer says,“sowwy if i’m not vewy good but i’m not feeling vewy weh” Shutupandrockonwithit. I promise i’ll only apologise for infecting the front row.

Went to see the King of the Underworld, Nick Cave the other night. Jesus, what a show. Incredible. Stagger Lee. Terrifying brilliance.

So I’ve had me first magazine cover! Big Issue in Scotland. Nice pic of me lookin well ‘ard. ‘I’m a bloody singer, got it? Good.’

Uh. I’m going to bed, for i think I have a pulmonary edema. (i don’t really, i’m just reading a really good book about climbing Everest, and the people who get that should go to bed too. But at least 3,000 feet lower.)

    SERIOUS FOOD WARNING.

For those of you who involve yourselves in the practice of impulse cooking, never, i repeat NEVER try and make a stew involving mackerel. If you are misguided enough to try, do not be fooled that by attempting to make it into soup, it will taste, or more importantly, smell any better.

Should you continue to ignore this warning, you will invariably end up spending hours boil washing every kitchen utensil you own, and be haunted by it’s layers of aromatic horror for many days.

    Help me…

Kew Gardens on a sunday eh. Escapee bright green Parakeets, a red-headed woodpecker, palm trees, big fat fishes…

It feels like time to write. It’s been a while i must admit, There’s been cerebral goings on, but nothing on paper. It’s always a sign when i start going into stationary shops…i have a compulsive addiction for buying blank books…

Discovered an interesting new snack you might want to try. In fact, i shall share a Steve Osbornism* with you: a small snack outwith mealtimes is called a ‘schmackerel’. So, todays schmackerel is an oatcake with peanut butter and avacado. Yet another website page that needs to be added. x

*Steve Osborne is the marvellous man who produced my soon-to-be-born album. You’ll be relieved that he did teach me plenty about music as well as foodstuffs.

Went on a ‘Bush-is-back-in’ funeral march last night. Felt good to share my dark cloud of angst with other depressed people & in the end I felt stronger for it. It was with the Campaign against Climate Change folks(dubya getting back in gives them a WHOLE lot more work…) and we stomped from Holborn to the U.S.Embassy.

Great speech by the woman from Friends of the Earth who told us the Queen is getting into renewable energy sources & is planning to put turbines in place at Windsor Castle. Well done ma’am. Finally, a great interesting fact. x

Man, it’s just a barrage of love. Without sounding like a right brown noser, I’ve read ALL the messages i’ve received!! And have thouroughly enjoyed the hours it’s taken.

It’s a bit odd really, i’m so used to having a handle on it all – replying to e-mails, posting cd’s, drawing flyers, and i really want to carry on with the things i can do, but it’s sad/brilliant that i cant keep up anymore.

I feel like i’ve been in a tornado of candy floss…whippy and mad, and it’s left me covered in sugar and feeling decidedly pink…fookin grand to hear Other Side of the World on Jo Whiley the other morning. I was being all cool, but then she said she’d play it again next week and i threw a projectile air-guitar move onto the landing and the downstairs neighbour called me to see if I’d had a fall.

No incredible facts have come my way recently, but i’m on the lookout. I think there should be a page on the site. But there has to be proof, otherwise it’s just stupid and people would write in about streets in the midlands where cars roll uphill and the like. Nonsense.

It was very emotional to say goodbye to the Earlies & Micah P Hinson. What amazing and inspiring people, who incedentally make incredible music that I would recommend you listen to.
    Nighty x

So there i am, peering up at a 7inch tv in the corner of a sweaty Fibbers pub in York with The Earlies on one side, Micah P Hinson on the other, and Halfcousin providing essential balance. Tim the landlord was kind enough to stay a little late last friday so i could enjoy my first adventure inside television with old friends, new friends, and a whisky. Which is an old friend.

I’d just come off stage after a stonking Halfcousin gig in Sheffield when i got the call to do Jools the following night. uh letmehaveathinkaboutthatyes. With hindsight, I’m VERY glad i didn’t have more time to think about it as i sat there watching The Cure…

Obviously, playing the tune was a top ride, but I did enjoy witnessing 7 professionals wearing headsets assemble the little bastard pedal for me and make him all neat and tidy. Just like new he was.

What a fuckin great experience. Raw life. Seat of pants. Bone jingling minutes of the day challenging me to a game of chicken, and i stood firm in the headlights. And i got an hour of Robert Smith’s time afterwards which was like having a birthday.

I’ve been wide-eyed at the response. Amazing messages. Muchas gracias amigos, me likey telly programmos. See you at the gigs xx

Good God!! What the hell am i doing in Sheffield on a monday??? I’ll tell you what i’m doing, I’m on tour with Halfcousin, that’s what. An amazing musical friend from Orkney needed assistance as his musicians pulled out just before a support tour with the magnificent Earlies.

So, i’m on a bus with 10 burly blokes and 2 lovely ladies, a boot full of booze, and heading around the country for the next 10 days blowing on my flute, playing wah wah keyboards, and learning the clarinet as i go. (You wouldn’t believe how like a goose a clarinet can sound. Bristol found out last night.)

It does seem a little mental i admit, on the verge of releasing my own first album, to go on tour with someone elses band, but it’s so fabulous to play these other instruments and meet all these wonderful folks. And i could never pass up an adventure…

The False Alarm EP is burrowing away into a few people’s worlds and i’m receiving marvellous vibes in return. The band gigs were shupa dupa despite the phenomenal multitude of technical hiccups(ie. the entire lighting rig at The Faversham in Leeds switching off 5 minutes into the gig, resulting in us playing by candlelight…) but the important thing is always the feel, and the feel is good.

I’ve been having a right old laugh on them radio shows too; you get to do this massive gig, but actually only play for one person and get tea and biscuits. Brilliant.

Well, as a Halfcousin band member, i must away to the stage. I’m praying that the Earlies lead singer’s outrageous snoring disorder will grant me a little more sleep tonight, but it seems life is just a little too exciting for shut eye right now…xx

Begad, i’m behind! A synopsis of the last few days?...weeks? Lets start with last wednesday…

I’m sitting in an old pub that’s been turned into an incredible photo shoot location; a kitsch den of iniquity with four-poster beds, furious 70’s wallpaper, just a mindfuck of colour, having my hair and make-up done. Jo Whiley’s on the wireless & she plays False Alarm, starting the track again after saying she din’t want to talk over the start. And right then, life turned into a mirror-ball.

Thursday, the boys & I jump in a big van and drive to Scotland for our 1st gig in Edinburgh, a rammed and rioutous sweaty affair with a jammed ‘Black Horse & the Cherry Tree’ to finish off. King Tuts in Glasgow rocked, the aftermath leading us straight into a night of mojitos and Serge Gainsbourg covers (you’ll be disappointed that i wasn’t singing in french, but i was giving it some on the Mexican acoustic bass. It was so huge it made me look like a hobbit.) York last night found us with a keyboard on holiday in Glasgow, a broken in half cello, and us doing a storming gig, filling in the gaps.

Whatever shall our 4th gig hold in store…

Tomorrow, i board a train to Liverpool, for i, little old KT Tunstall, am supporting Travis at The Cavern. On my own! With the little bastard pedal! Any messages for Fran?...xx

I just LOVE loudness. I’m in band rehearsals with my new (very old decrepit brilliant) transistor amp on number 1, and it’s absolutley massive. What would happen at 2? 5? God forbid, 10? I’m almost too afraid to try.

It’s hard to describe what it’s like when 4 people somehow find each other, become great friends, share a similar outlook on life and how to live it, and then play shit hot music together. It makes it virtually impossible to deny the existence of fate.

The problem is, we are currently being distracted by learning, and once that is done, i’m a little worried that we are going to descend into terminal stupidity. We’ve already started playing death metal Bryan Adams and the grand prix theme tune, and we still have lots of things to learn. I suppose we could always make a living doing childrens parties.

Ok, so this is possibly the best yet. I see an advert for ‘diamonds’ (in my ‘Materialistic Diva Faith & Practice Guide’ you ask? No, Time Out) and for just under 3 grand, you can have the ashes of a relative or pet made into a certified ‘real’ finger rock. Not only that, but depending on the ‘impurities’ in your grandpa’s remains, you get all different colours.

The sun has got his turbo powered he-man outfit on, hip hip etc. My word, it’s special to be in London in the sun. However, I’m reading a book about Global Warming and it’s disturbing. The climate change is the equivalent of the UK moving south at 20metres a day. Fun for a while, but it starts getting very dry after a while…haven’t got to the part yet where it tells you how you can help. Hope it doesn’t involve not eating ice-cream…but it might! Methane! Cows farting! Will i be limited to sorbet forever?! Noooooo!!!

So, imagine the scene. I’m wearing a FABulously spangly turquoise dress, muddy boots, green eye make-up and a grin, standing on the fountain in Picadilly Circus doing a photo shoot with a make-up artist attending to offensive smudging, and tourists start taking photos of me getting my photo taken, not because they have any idea who i am, but because of the eyeshadow? I dont know! but go and do it – it’s brilliant! All you need is two friends, some spray on glitter, a pot of green paint and a throw away camera. Highly recommended day out.

Whipped into a musical frenzy we were! 5 days of band rehearsal bliss. Brought on comas due to over-exertion, but at least we’ll all have tight buns for the shows. Bin lids, car brake discs, tibetan finger cymbals, and of course, the Headrush, it’s an extravabloodyganza.

Some teacher recently completed a running race from the west coast to the east coast of the US by running 50 miles a day for 2 months. Two fuckin marathons a DAY. And a sky diver jumped out a plane at 11,000ft, her parachute didn’t open, she hit some power lines and was treated for a fractured pelvis. And it’s only Tuesday.

I love Scotland, but it’s DARK for gadssake! In Glasgow (with the lights on) and the gigs are rolling on and going dandy. Doing coffee shops is a test – it reminds me of playing in Henderson’s cafe in Edinburgh when i was a doley – it’s sometimes a battle of wills…you have to win people out of their conversations. And it’s great when you do.

Off to Edinburgh today, but gonna take a drive into the country first. Loch Lomond aint far away and i fancy meself a little fishy on a little dishy. If anyone has spotted a scottish summer elsewhere in the country, please send it home at once. x

Man, my vocal chords are well ‘ard. Been singing every night for 10 days now, and the larynx just keeps on getting stronger. I remember going to the doctor for a check up a couple of years ago, and he called the nurse over saying,“check this out! They’re double the size of a normal female!!”

Absolutely fookin brilliant. Loving it. Have to say that Leeds Hi Fi Club, Nottingham Rescue Rooms & 93ft east in London were shupa shpecial – great clubs and wicked crowds.

Off to lands of the north to play Manchester tonight. Little pedal is behaving very well and has only been naughty a couple of times. (You see what i’m doing here? By giving the pedal a personality, i can therefore transfer the responsibility of error into apparent ‘blame’...)

Big up to all of you who’ve come down to gigs – apologies for my no-show after the 93 feet east gig in London; I found myself trapped by a comfy sofa backstage with a pint of wine and a grin. Diva-like neglectful behaviour. It won’t happen again. xx

Ah, the homeland. Gigs going good in the coffee shops of the north. Off to entertain Stirling this evening, but stopped off for a quick jaunt on the beach with the folks. Bloody freezing it was.

It feels mighty fine to be doing my thing, especially with my newfound technological prowess. (I’ve drawn myself a nursery school flow chart of which lead goes where and it works a treat) The Headrush is tickling everyone’s fancy and feeling very pleased with itself. Funny little Taiwanese fellow.

I’m reading a book about the universe, and did you know that it’s impossible to draw our solar system? If the world was the size of a pea, Pluto would be two and a half kilometres away. And the size of a non-visible bacterium. Brilliant.

Worra tour. The mighty Voi & I took on the Italian mountains, a night in Brussels, and a hop to Istanbul. During the latter, Sophie & i decided to go for a Turkish bath and ended up sweating like bulls and being pleasantly pummeled by two tiny men. God it was good i tell you.

Well, the tour dates are going on the calendar & it is only HOURS before you shall know of them.

Going for a vocal coaching session tonight to learn how to not arse my voice up, and it turns out that the guru i seek is none other than the woman who sang the Bodyform ad music! Legendary. I’m suspecting the words “no”, “late-night” and “drunkenness” may be mentioned.

It turned out we had both seen Black Rider, the out-there Tom Waits/Robert Wilson musical starring Marianne Faithful. We agreed on its aesthetic triumph, but for the most part neither of us knew what the hell was going on. Then i says to im, “if i want wot, come and get wot? Babylon? Eh?”

Good god. Torn out of a Glastonbury induced coma by pre-noon visiting parents. Ma&Pa rock almost as much as PJ Harvey. Magnificent! 5” killer heels in neon pink (yes, PJ Harvey. Not my parents.) and incredible sound. Woof. Apparently, she didn’t have any skants on, and my my that skirt was short and that stage was high if you get where i’m going.

I’m perturbed that i honestly didn’t miss washing for 5 days. Some friends had set up this amazing camp of 9 tents together with a big white camouflage net over it all like a little heaven and oh, i could’ve stayed for months. The Voi gig was superb – what a buzz – the crowd were going ballistic and at one point i had to jump up and down very fast because i got terribly over-excited.

Ok, that’s been lots of words and i need to have a break now. Pff. x

What madness is this!! Playing in a Bavarian cowbarn? Getting up at 5.30 every morning? Bicycling with wierd backward-pedal-breaking systems around dutch islands? Why, tis the Voi of course!

It’s begun to feel unfamiliar being at home and not in some bizarre setting eating endless offerings of bread and cheese. But i simply love it i do.

Sophie & i have begun to compile our ‘Guide to Mince’. The display of male mincing we have experienced whilst on our travels, regardless of sexual orientation, is just too flagrant to ignore, so a record must be made. Jumpers draped over shoulders, flashing rollerblades in a nightclub…you would be amazed.

Played with the band today – Yeah boy!! We is rockin da rehearsal room!
Was a little upset to discover that i’ve been billed on a poster recently as ‘KT Tungstall’. Beats ‘KT Tubstall’ which i endured a while back. I don’t doubt there are many more to come…xx

1am in Tel Aviv. In Israel for a week of gigs with the Voi and I must admit I was pretty overwhelmed for the first few days. It’s peaceful it’s heavy, it’s traditional it’s western, it’s hippy it’s orthodox…We visited Jerusalem; we didn’t nearly have long enough, but it’s so much to take in. All those religions living piled on top of each other and it’s SO quiet. Sat on the beach, watched the sunset and the strongest feeling I have is that it’s so beautiful here.

The shows have been wicked – lots of people saying how important it is to them that we’ve come. Brilliant watching an audience sing along to Stevie singing Hebrew rather than the english lyrics. If there’s one thing to say about the crazy jews, Oi Va Voi properly move people. It’s been emotional as they say. x

Hello June. It’s sunny and I’m at home, which is a special occasion these days. My room is utter chaos from weeks of arbitrary bag emptying, so avoiding said area for the moment. I just found out that the sweet tinkle of the ice cream van that frequents my neighbourhood is actually the sound of the ‘hash man’. Nice. That’d be some flake.

I was honoured to judge Hertfordshire university’s battle of the bands last night – it was a little heavy as i did a set myself afterwards…judge and be judged man, the pressure was on. The bands were pretty good (especially a cover of ‘sweet child of mine’, my current ring tone of choice) and took me back to the handful of student experiences i can remember.

Getting itchy to the point of psoriasis to play my own music. The process of getting a record out is so bloody slow. I must admit that Oi Va Voi have saved my sanity, and in a very enjoyable way indeed. Talking of which, off to Israel with them for a week on the 7th. Should be quite a ride. Shall let you know xx

Stavanger, Athens, Milan…so close to acquiring my flash-bastard-jet setting-guest-vocalist badge. And to think that this time 3 years ago i was inducted into the doley busker hall of fame. The only sure thing is change eh.

The Voi gigs have been great – we all ended up doing a very well oiled impromptu late night set at a jazz club in Milan after playing to what looked like the cast of Dynasty for a charity event. I’m assuming there wont be many visitors to this site from said audience, so i can safely indulge that very rich Italian women have proportionate hair size to their age. So when i say there were some older women there, you can imagine the volume.

It’s time to sit tight and play zen. Time must be taken (AARGH!) to make sure the album (NRRGH!) is just right and (FFR!) as you know, these things take (KAAAA!) time. I must be the most impatient bastard i know. But then, it has taken the best part of a decade to reach this point & get this beauty recorded, so I can forgive myself for a little tension.

I was cleaning the pond the other day and when i brought my hand out, it was alive with green phlegm & tadpoles! Screamed like a nancy i did, and then got quite worried i’d killed them all. God, not more aquatic drama…x

Just had two wisdom teeth out in the dentist’s chair & Simon my manager very wisely recommended a dose of anti-anxiety medication and man, that stuff works. “Oooh!” i said, “the nice lady pulled my teeth out. Oh well.” No monstrous swelling, no horrific pain, and i can eat fine, (especially ice cream. For that is what you eat after surgical procedures n’est pas?) And i have my teeth. It’s ‘Other Side of the World’ day today. It seems i can’t sing properly unless i’m playing my guitar; still sounds nice, but just ain’t quite happnin’ you know? I tried air guitar, but it doesn’t cut the mustard. So that means we need sound seperation you see… i was wondering if one of those big plastic collars that dogs wear after operations might help. I survived! If only I had filmed the whole tour, I could release a thrilling rock-umentary called “Touching the Voi”. Sorry. I couldn’t let that one slip past.

Had a blast. Saw new cities, fell in love with Rome, then tapas, sampled many wines and met many colourful people. Oi Va Voi treated me like a princess and man, did they put on kick-ass shows.

Glad to be back in the studio doing my thing. I’ve also recently realised my deep-seated love for statistics. 1 in 10 cardiac arrest patients report out of body experiences. Goldfish not included.

Ole!! Highlight of the tour for me last night – we danced the night away in Madrid and finished off in a squalid little drinking hole where we found 4 gnarly locals playing the most incredible Flamenco. Nik(Voi guitarist) and i gave them a bashful rendition of Ladino and then sat back to enjoy some fully proper Espana.

Made friends with Diego, the leather cap wearing, umbrella banging old singer, who scribbled down the secrets of Madrid´s Flamenco nights. So! I have the address and i´m coming back…th-th-th-thooper!! x

Baar-ce-looo-naa!! Sadly haven’t any time in the city as we just drove overnight from Turin. Man, Italy knows how to cook. We had some proper rockin’ dinners. The gigs continue to surprise us – they’re packed out and singing along. Jon made a small spinal tap style error by saying “Ciao Milano” when we were playing Rome, but they forgave him eventually.

Roma, Roma…blew me away. That shit is oooold! So beautiful. Florence too. Dreamy. Still diggin’ the bus life, but really looking forward to a permanent bathroom.

Can’t believe we only have 3 gigs left. The drive from Burgos back to London is going to be a little messy as we’ve collected all the leftover booze and filled the boot of the bus especially for that trip…may we live to tell the tale! adios!! xx

Here’s a computer backstage at the gig at the Laiterie in Strasbourg! just done 2 songs and the Voi’s are rockin away in the background…had a root around the city today and saw one of the most beautiful cathedral rose windows i’ve seen. Bricky’s really put the effort in back in them days.

There’s lots and LOTS of people out there. It’s really bizarre being hundreds of miles away from home, and here’s all these people who know the words. How do they know?!

I’ll be off – very pleased with my first ever mid-gig diary entry!

Ah, my last night at home for three weeks. About to get on my first tour bus and go say hello to 16 European cities with Oi Va Voi. Did you know that you’re not allowed to poo on a tour bus? It’s truth. Glad i found out.

The Joss support gigs were proper trumps. A lovely lass she is. And what a pair of lungs. Woo-ee she can sing. Funny to think that i hadn’t even started singing & writing til i was older than she is now.

Well, better pack me bags and find my passport as the crazy jewish funbus awaits me! Who knows what foreign tales lie in store the diary…x

Kids, eh? Went to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit(so fab), and while we were going, “ooh! He got close to that hyena!”, realised it was the 11-14yr old section. At that age, I was just into other peoples photographs of Limahl.

Getting on well with the vocal recording. It’s been quite a ride; to go into a wee sensory-deprevation booth, put big noisy ear-muffs on, and attempt to sing the most moving, definitive performance EVER is no joke. Thankfully, Steve has taught me how to ‘not give a fuck’ as he wisely puts it, which involves red wine and a bad attitude. I’m diggin it.

Sitting in a vegan cafe in Bradford-on-avon and i’m just not convinced by the soup i have to say. Steve and i are hoping the coming cold snap will prompt the necessary window to try out his new sledge. Well, you can’t work without a break…

It’s a funny old game making an album. You just have to make some disturbing aural mistakes to know what’s proper great. Thankfully we’re back on the proper great path.

I went to see Primal Scream at the weekend and thought i behaved very well preserving my voice by not screaming. Unfortunately i went half deaf. Bloody hell. They make loud noise. Bobby Gillespie threatening to put the mic stand in someone’s head, Shane McGowan coming on & looking as if he’d never seen Bobby Gillespie before in his life…apparently not one of their best shows, but as a Scream virgin, i digged it. Swasticka eyes. Come on!

Woof!! That was an intense week. I’m finding myself becoming very impatient. I want to hear the songs finished NOW with all the backing vocals NOW and all the guitars done NOW and not LATER!!!! But at the same time, i don’t want it to end. And i certainly don’t want to give back the gorgeous piano we hired for the session that even has a gravity-defying lid-shutting mechanism. Awesome.

Steve producer is having trouble sleeping. He keeps being plagued by whichever song we’re working on and it just goes round and round in his head all night. As much as i’m very sorry he isn’t getting his proper shut eye, at least i know the tunes are catchy…

I am attempting to drink the amount of water you’re actually meant to drink during the day. It’s a bit of a new year’s resolution. Rather than breaking it, it would be more accurate to use the word ‘failing’ i feel.

You see, you can’t just drink loads in one go, because then you just wee it out again. You have to drink a glass every hour or so. It says on the volvic bottle that ‘a 3-4% dehydration level can lead to a 20-30% drop in concentration and performance.’ Of course, my eyes widened as i realised that, seeing as i drink next to nothing, and should i drink as much as i’m meant to, i would feel, and perform, like spiderman.

I’m persevering. Although all i seem to have gained so far is a cold. Drink lots of water they say. x

Ah, the familiar smell of a new year. The festivities seemed over in a flash.

I love christmas eve at home in St.Andrews. It’s a right royal piss up down the juicer. This year, i bumped into an old school friend I hadn’t seen for 15 years. He was smaller than me then – now he’s 6’3”. It was like someone had just stuck an industrial air pump up his bottom and made him suddenly massive. Such are the games that time plays.

I also caught up with my friend Craig, singer of ‘Dogs Die In Hot Cars’, who also have an album out this year and they’re SKILL!! Check ‘em. We reminisced about sitting on the beach last new year with a plastic cup of champagne, deciding we would get record deals and make uber albums. I suppose this year’s resolution should be an attempt to sell some of them.

Well, i’ll be considerably closer to having said sellable article after part 2 of the recording. Off tomorrow armed with a flute, an action man bin, a selection of hats, and money for sweets. Don’t worry, the guitars are there already. xxx

Ahh! Life on the road. Termiantor 3 is much better than i expected, The Holy Grail is still hilarious, i have NO IDEA why i didn’t like The Big Lebowski first time round as this time it was top drawer, and it’s very hard not to eat crisps when there’s 24 bags of them on the floor.

The Voi mini tour has been crackin. Some small audiences, but very appreciative. Liverpool is a fantastic city, there’s a man in Birmingham with some amazing Hank Williams stories, Bristol does a fine platter of fried re-constituted meat (so i was informed) and Cambridge is still to come. Laundry has become a race against time and odour.

Must remember to buy James Brown’s ‘Ghetto Christmas’ on cd for when i go home. Priceless. x

Project the film on the wall, bets on how many of your bald friends come as Ming the Merciless, bit of queen on the hi-fi, and wierd green cocktails! Not only that, I’m thinking of trying to stage a GLOBAL Flash Gordon party. Choose a night and see how many can be staged around the world! Man, the Voi and i had one crazy mutha of a night on Monday. We were on our way to a gig in Oxford when the lovely Sophie, klezmer violinist supremo, passed out in a BP garage. She’s fine now, but it was tense. So, the guys carry on to Oxford in the van, while i accompany Sophie for my very first ride in an ambulance. Got a little acquainted with Ealing A&E, then got a lift up to Oxford to do the gig.

As if that wasn’t enough, I went and wore a skirt to top it all off. Unbelievable.

Just had album rehearsals this week and feeling so buffed about how it’s going to sound. Got that power ranger feeling again…

Discovered an amazing thing. Philadelphia cheese(with chives) mixed with Bick’s Molten Chilli Lava Sauce on pasta. Fully awesome. I think we should have a recipe page. x

Wow. London has slapped me hard on my return from the lovely Isle of Skye. A welcoming slap, but definitely hard. It didn’t take long to get used to building a fire every morning and evening, watching the sunset over the sea, wondering what sheep wondered about, bobbing along the postman pat roads, and using whisky for mouthwash.(For any fans of the water of life, get some Talisker in – luscious fiery beast it is!)

Before i left, something very amusing happened. Went to try and see Kill Bill at 8pm. Bought tickets from the machine, which proceeded to secretly dish us out tickets for the 10.30pm show. The ‘usher’ ‘ushered’ us to the ‘correct’ screen; we crept along a row in front of a bunch of people, sat down, and saw the last 3 minutes of the 6.30 show. Now that was quite funny anyway, but then we thought about what the 200 people watching the climax must have thought as we settled down with our popcorn.

Still, the end was good. And we liked the music. Bugger.

Recorded the Ep at Gaia music in Kensal road on Friday and just spent the weekend mixing it. I’m over the moon and into the solar system. We decided not to have my silly babbling all over it, as on the 4th listen we imagined the listener swearing at their stereo and shouting, “just shut up and SING woman”.

Baby it’s cooold outside! But I’ve re-discovered some very friendly jumpers. Like old friends they are. Bit smelly.

Can you frickin believe it, I’m gonna record an EP this week! I think it’s such a wicked plan. I love the fact that it’s like being able to hear a really intimate gig before the big glorious bastard of an album. It really does justice to the songs this way.

Did a car boot sale the other day with my mate Kirsty. Hilarious it was. We were a bit disappointed that the old ‘jumble sale’ ethic has been replaced by stalls full of electronic goods & kitchen cleaning products. Maybe we’re cynical. Maybe that man really did have 200 spare remote control cars in his loft. Funniest of all was being next to a DVD stall and watching who decided to venture into the ‘dirty’ bag round the back.

Please, keepers of the universe, don’t let me get a cold. Xx

I have 2 theories. Either I have a throat infection, or I was viciously attacked by rabid sandpaper whilst asleep. The outcome is a frightening cross-breed of Ray Charles and Babs Windsor. I know what’s going to happen – everyone will say, “shit girl, your voice sounds great like that!” and i will have to become a raging chain smoking alcoholic to sustain the husky wonder.

Very sad news that Elliot Smith commited suicide. I don’t know his stuff well, but love what i’ve heard.

On a brighter note, i was lucky enough to see Damien Rice in action with his astounding band at Shepherd’s Bush. I’m pleased to say it’s one of the best gigs I’ve seen. It feels so fuckin GREAT to be moved by music. And he made everyone laugh alot. Irish so he is.

I’m going to the Isle of Skye in 2 weeks! Cottage, sea, hot pies, cards, yes, yes, yes. May the sea shanties begin x

Ah!! Country air. Lovely Wiltshire, sheep shit absolutely everywhere. Arriving back in London tonight, it felt like home. As it did last night, when a young punk hijacked my bus at 2am demanding that he bring on board his broken bike. Driver refuses, turns off engine, we walk home. Who needs the country eh.

I was thinking today about how early people’s memories begin. My dad reckons he may have a memory from 8 months old, and some people swear they remember being born. I remember swallowing a greenfly when i was three. Buggered if i know my home phone number though.

Gig at the Cobden Club tomorrow. Sounds right swanky. I might even clean my sneakers. My friends from home, ‘Dogs Die In Hot Cars’ signed to V2!! I’m telling you, there’s somethin’ in the fife water…sheep shit probly. xx

I’m very pleased with myself. I was on the radio for the first time EVER tonight! OiVaVoi and I did a live acoustic session for bbc radio london. It was sooo cool. I had a huge big blue foam thing on my mic and everything.

I’m feeling so excited about making an album. I tell you, the universe is conspiring. More and more i feel like i know what and how and why, and it feels like letting go somehow. Letting a current take over from swimming. Woah daddy! Hang on just a wee minutey, this is all getting a bit fuckin’ arty. Someone pass me a grip. Got it.

The 12 Bar gig was so damn special. It really was a stormer. I must eat mackerel for dinner more often…

It was like an episode of The Red Hand Gang, handing out flyers and running around like urchins trying to beg a guitar off someone (thankyou Chaim who obliged!). The gig was so special, and the owner Sissy asked me back the next night! So I played again! And it was even brilliant-er.

Now i have the travel bug and i want to see the Northen Lights. Do they make appearances this time of year? Ooooh, i can see them in my mind!

Dang. Moving house is a fairly heavy incedent. How i wished i was a buddhist – robes, prayer flags, razor, book. Wicked, lets move. New house rocks my world with it’s little fish pond, big space, and lovely inhabitants.

Very amusing thing happened – i was just discussing the abundance of wide-boy cars in Harlsden, where i now call home, when a top-down, white, leather soaked bmw pulled up at the traffic lights and we observed with wide eyes that it had dvd screens in the seat backs…then the guy stalls and on second glance we realized it was C-c-craig David. Ho ho.

Went to see Respiro last night. What an absolutely class piece of work. Anyone speak Italian? What does that mean? And how come british and american child actors always come across as implausably pretentious and insincere, but european kids are mind blowingly brilliant? Laters xx

Not only have the wheels of the global domination plan begun, but I MET BECK!!! For a few minutes, i became a tiny little jelly-fish. Went to see his show at Brixton – which was fookin skill – managed to get back stage& tiptoed over…

“Hello Beck!” i said(at which point it struck me that he has quite a wierd name.) I talked to him about making a first album, being honest with the music you create; he said he felt ‘Sea Change’ was an album he really had to make. “Make sure you do what makes you happy.” he said.
Obviously, i couldn’t walk properly afterwards, so just leant fashionably on the bar a while…

Well hang me out with granny’s washing. I’ve signed a record deal!! And a good one! With a really cool company! And they love my stuff!

I would describe the experience as climbing a very difficult mountain, not being sure you can do it, forgetting why you’re doing it, going certifiably mad for a couple of days, and upon reaching the top, discovering a fully superb pub. Whilst realising you want to be a landlord. I’ll stop there.

Cant’ write for long as my brain is melting. Thank christ i’m off to Edinburgh for a few days. Is this some kind of cataclysmic karma due to years of old women moaning about the cold? How i wish i’d gone easier on the hairspray back in the 80’s…My God! Maybe the hairstyling revolution of that decade has provoked this global warming!! Something to do with fridges and hamburger boxes too though…xx

Had the pleasure of meeting Wayne Coyne in the dinner queue- he was ridiculously friendly, very excited, and covered in fake blood.

Sunday was Move festival in Manchester where R.E.M kicked the shit out of their T in the P show; they were so brilliant. Lots of top new songs and alot of old beauties as well. Funny comment from Mr.Stipe before playing ‘Losing My Religion’, “This one’s yours, but we’re happy to cover it for you.”

Spent a surreal night in a “luxurious airline-style reclining seat” on the sleeper and awoke to the fair north. Home in St.Andrews for the first time in 6 months – things have been pretty hard recently between me and the music industry, so a stroll on the beach with me ma & pa is going to feel like heaven.

Heard a gorgeous story the other day about a 6 year old who was getting seriously into guitars, and when his mum explained that her toothbrush made a noise because it was electric, he replied that he preferred his acoustic toothbrush…

Reminded me of singing in a skill Edinburgh function band called ‘Honkie’. A wedding favourite was always ‘Young Hearts Run Free’, and i always found it most disconcerting singing,

Good LORD!! I went to Barcelona. My lasting thought is that Gaudi was one proper optimist. Imagine growing up with that around you. Baking with mother as a kid and thinking, ‘actually mummy, we could make this cake 16 feet tall and cover the whole thing in chocolate ants.’ I loved the city so.

Listening to the rough mixes of the first 5 tunes as i write, and i’m so sure we’re onto something tasty you know. I’ve done lots of artwork too, and doing some photos for the album cover next week. I’ll be putting up some tasters on the site so keep yer eyes peeled!

Reading Johnny Cash’s autobiography. I love him. I don’t want to arse this up and need to get wise, so reading the experience of an old guy who made the music he wanted to and pleases the world is a good start. Because your miiine…i walk the liiine… xx

“What you believe in will save you.” – Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. I think he might be right. Whether or not it’s good for you, that’s another story.

I’ve decided, after reading an interview with Tim DeLaughter(nAme!) that I want to be a backing singer for The Polyphonic Spree. If anyone has a spare culty robe, it would save my tablecloth.

Prague is sooooo gorgeous! It’s a grand old lady of a town. Stayed in a stupidly lavish hotel with my friends Dave & Phil, and the movie turned out to be ‘Ugly Americans’, a multi-million dollar Spielberg flick! Rock on. Didn’t get in it tho – the guys are extras on friday, but I’m in the airport waiting for a jetplane to get me home in time for my gig thursday night.

Gotta go, the tin can’s taking off without me. Ta ta!! xx

I’m on fire!! Put me out someone! I’m too excited about playing 93 feet east tomorrow. These guys I’m playing with are so good it makes me feel like a power ranger.

Taking a wee jaunt to Prague in a few days. A friend of a friend is making a film and there’s a promise of being an extra… no idea what it is. Not high profile porn would be a bonus.

My friend I’m staying with has recently announced his gayness! So I’ll be raising a few of whatever they drink in Prague to him, his new man, and glorious freedom. Chin chin xx

Written two new songs. One is called ‘White Bird with a Black Tail’, about, well, this bird I saw. Doves and pigeons getting it on in the city. It’s beautiful man.

The other one is called ‘honey’, a little country number about when you’re a bit broken. Part of the chorus goes ‘out on the town/you’re playing it down/that you can’t even get yourself home’. You know the score.

Did you hear that story last week about the 20ish yr old climber who hacked his own hand off due to a rock falling on it & getting trapped Balls. Steel. My mum used to climb and said “he broke the first rule! Never climb alone!”

ALWAYS listen to your mother xx

    Sha mo muthas!!
Had a rocking gig in Edinburgh on Tuesday. Played solo for an hour..totally indulgent. My gorgeous friend Tracey Braithewaite came up to help me for a few at the end which was skill. Good to see the traditional blootered guy in the audience is still a standard up there, shouting nonsense with proper passion…

New Goldfrapp album sounds grand. As do the Chilli Peppers and the Foo-Fighters – how top is it that the ‘mature’ guys sound the coolest and still look well hot?!!

Coom on summer, rev them engines!! xx

Went to see Beck do an acoustic gig at the Albert Hall last night. That wee dude cooks on gas. He was fanTAStic. His voice is just gorgeous. It fully affirmed my suspicions that he’s totally like my favourite artist.

He did ‘Nobody’s Fault But My Own’ on this wicked accordion-box thing. (If you don’t own the album ‘Mutations’, go to the shops!) He also used a great little drum machine and dropped some samples and played wurlitzer, piano, dobro slide guitar, aaaah!! Bliss!!

COME OOON!! Rockin gig at the The Goose on Thursday!! Grand crowd. First night with the band – Arnie Lindner on bass, Luke Bullen on drums, and Martin Slattery on Wurlitzer and electric guitar. Dem boys! Dey’s reeeal good!

I got so lost in playing – it’s quite wierd when that happens as you end up feeling like you’re in your bedroom, so when you open your eyes you think, how the hell did all these people get in my house?

Getting ever closer to making an album…it’s pant-wettingly exciting, downside of that of course is the process making you feel like you can’t find a loo.
    Big up xx

Just finished a writing session with Iestyn Polson, the producer responsible for the rise and rise of Mr David Gray. Much fun was had. Amazing that there wasn’t a penny in sight for any of them until ‘White Ladder’ was in the shops & selling. Waddyareckon? Record companies or self-made success?

Got taken to a party the other night and found myself standing next to Charlene Spitteri. How come famous people always look really small in real life? Perhaps they all have tiny wee decoys.

    Questions questions…

Attended a quality saturday night comedy club at which one of the comedians commented on how much he enjoyed that they sent a man called Hans to look for Arms in Iraq…

Working with Tommy D this week, the producer who had the great pleasure of doing Lady Kylie’s latest album and International Velvet for Catatonia. He’s a top boy, and if we’re lucky we’ll come up with an international smash hit. Wikid. xx

Boo. Got the post-countryside-burning-stone-circle blues. Druid-based activity obviously uses up huge amounts of seratonin, and i already know what red wine does.

Such a memorable weekend. Went down to Joe Strummer’s place in Somerset where his wife has had a huge stone circle built for him. There was an incredible ceremony to bring the circle alive; the druids who built the circle laid out a maze in sawdust, covered it in parrafin, then come nightfall they set it alight and we walked through the burning labyrinth. Imagine your death inspiring such an awesome creation. An experience I’ll never forget.

I’ve decided to go to france. I’ve been checking the post for details of a stateside record deal, and I can’t wait any longer! Time flies when you’re having red wine and croissants, so away I shall go.

Been in the studio with a diamond producer from Orkney, and it’s sounding IMMENSE!! Visions of throbbing stadium shows and merchandise tables with mugs and badges…it’s too exciting.

Anyone want fags, booze, or a massive toblerone from the airport? xx
