KT Tunstall Diary

  1. 31st May, 2005

    Tuesday, May 31st

Sitting in Amsterdam airport waiting to fly to either Hamburg, Frankfurt, or Bremen (as i’m meant to go to all those places today apparently) and have just embarked on an epic 10 day, 6 country promotion fest. One precious day off after that gorgeous tour, and pfouuff. Washing machine on turbo, bag re-packed, off again.

The tour was a triumph – wicked crowds, amAZIng support from Stephen Fretwell which was such a pleasure to listen to every night (I’m a scary fan now), and very many moments of extended family hilarity with the boys and crew.

One story that must be told, was from Dublin. A girl at the front kept shouting “KT, YOU’RE A LESBIAN!!” at which i was left kind of speechless. So i say, “YOU CANT KEEP SAYING THAT!” and then shared with the crowd; that there girl called me a lesbian. Anyway, she’s trying to get my attention for ages and i’m kind of ignoring her in the friendliest way possible, so she chucks a note on stage. One of the crew picked it up and read it to me after the show; “KT, we were saying LEGEND.” Ah.

There were a good few sunrises had – Sam has had a broken foot & the best i vaguley remember was me running around a motorway services carpark in his big Darth Vader plastic boot along with crutch. It was quite a look.

Thanks so much for the copious screaming/quietness/lovely messages/brilliant support over the tour and see you in sunshine.

    Tuesday May 24th

Howay!! Sitting in an ents office (no, not a talking tree you Lord of the Rings geek) in Newcastle and quietly reflecting on the wonders and joys of the road…bugger. My battery’s about to run out. I’ll write soon…

  4. 16th May, 2005

    Sunday, May 15th

Must go to bed, must go to bed…tour starts tomorrow, the album’s gone top ten, i had my toes in the Italian flavoured sea that lapped the shores of Tuscany at lunch time, now i’m at home and everyone’s going all mental and excited and mum & dad are all geared up to see me at Shepherd’s Bush, and i’m meant to go to sleep. I dinny hink so, as they say in Fife.

And Beck’s new album rules. And apparently Chris De Burgh is coming to a gig. And now there’s a billboard down the road from my falt. You see?! It’s starting again.

I’m gonna go for the hot chocolate with whisky. It needs a name…Hot Choccy Bastard. The B word has always held endearing connotations for me.

Hmm. Forgot to hang my washing out.Going to do it now. Forgotten how it’s so long since i washed anything…gnarly. Life on the road. Grrr.

    Hello tour. x

  5. 8th May, 2005

    Sunday, May 8th

Hola! I write from a 5th floor hotel room in Glasgow and i can see brilliant little blue neon lights all over the roof below. I’d like to take this opportunity to say (yes, i’ve had some vino) that the message board makes me feel so proud of where i’m at. All you guys just make me laugh and go wide-eyed, so thankyou for being ace.

Had such a blast at Radio 1’s big weekend – gabbed to the legendary Jo Whiley (“thankyou for name checking me aaall the time!”), met Coxy, Chris Moyles, and had a grand time of it busking with Colin & Edith. Colin had a go on my tambourine I’ll have you know (she’s called Olive to answer the forum question!) & very amusing finding out that Edith and I did our driving test in the same town (we both passed first time for the record, and no, girls don’t get special treatment. Honest.)

AND...i sneaked into the Foo Fighters’ porta cabin which was just opposite mine AND MET DAVE GROHL!!!! He said they hadn’t played for ages and it was going to sound like a bar band doing Foo covers, which of course it didn’t at all as they blatantly ruled. AND...i bumped into Chemical Brother Tom Rowlands, and wait for it…told me he’d bought a wee bastard pedal!! We’ll get a woo-hoo over the top of Galvanize yet.

So it was all very exciting indeedy. However, when we actually did our gig, none of us could hear a bloody thing on stage so i had NO idea if i was singing in tune. Still had a top time though.

And of course, our new secret was revealed – our ‘leccy guitarist! Sam will be on tour with us and adding some rrrawk now we’re in bigger venues. Hopefully he’ll be out of his crazy pump up shoe as he broke his foot a while ago.

You can’t say i don’t keep you informed after that effort. Oh and by the way, Eye to the T has just gone top 20 at number 18! Wonder what our little fellow Other Side of the World can manage tomorrow….

    Pip pip x

  6. 3rd May, 2005

    Tuesday, May 3rd

It would be a big pork pie if i said we weren’t bricking it a little at the old Live Lounge today!! Arnie wins the award of the year as he couldn’t hear his bass in his headphones, and thank god wee bastard behaved impeccably. It was a right larf! I admit i sellotaped the lyrics for Get Your Freak On to a music stand for fear they might fall off and then i really would have been scuppered…

I found myself on the highest point on the south coast yesterday – Golden Cap in Dorset. Stunning. Although I always get a little disappointed when you can see all that ocean, that you don’t see anything rearing up out of it. 70’s sci-fi films have a lot to answer for in my world. Also hopped in a friends’ beautiful split-screen VW camper on on Saturday and had a jaunt up to Epping Forest where we ate soup and foraged about in the mulch. Skill.

Into rehearsals next week…i have an exciting surprise for you…wait and see!!
    xx
