Home. Weird. Good but definitely weird. I’m on my OWN! I can’t remember when i last spent time away from people and all sorts of hoo-ha constantly whirring around my face. It’s easy to slip into, and strange to suddenly be without it. And i don’t miss it, but it does seem quiet…i can’t hear my own voice incessantly talking about myself for a start…bliss!
Off down to the coast tomorrow to write for a few days. Packing my studio into a car and setting it up by the sea to make hay while the sun shines, and probably while the bats fly.
Saw one of my favourite artists at SXSW – Micah P Hinson (and The Gospel of Progress). He continues to totally blow me away. We met while i was playing for Halfcousin, he was also supporting The Earlies. It’s so seldom i watch a show and find myself singing along and stamping like i’m playing myself, turn into a headshaker. (Perhaps i’m habitually one of those limp gig-goers – ‘you like it, show it, damn it! Am i a crossed-arms listener?! Must put a stop to that…)
His show was in a bar called Emo’s, and he made the room disappear. Such a good guitarist. What impressed me just as much as his show, was the fact that his parents were there & he was so honest on stage. The guys skins himself emotionally when he plays – his song Patience (my favourite); “And i’m running out of patience/to be fucking with you…” It was great to meet them, and his mum said (proper texan accent) “sometimes, it’s the only word that makes sense of the matter!”
I also caught Jim Noir, Editors, and The Pretenders who were all bloody marvellous live.
I suppose i should unpack my life and wash it before i pack it back up again. I do love this nomadic existence. I like paring down until you find out what the things are that you really need.
Right, i’m off to pare.

March 17th, Austin, Texas
Hoooo-wheeee!
I’d forgotten quite how mental SXSW is…one street packed full of music industry, bands, scenesters, hipsters, hip-hopsters, popsters, rockers, hillbillies, mods, cons, pros, and all those boys with the carefully messed hair are back…
It’s awesome, to coin a word. We’re playing the Blender Bar tonight with Editors, Jim Noir, and The Feeling (who are they? Missed that ‘The’...) and it shall rule. We have an hour to sound check AND do the gig, so fraught is the order of the day.
Played a wee spot at 1am this morning and had the pleasure of meeting Alex Arctic Monkey afterwards. It was most amusing; he had exactly the same outfit on as he did in a photo i’d seen of him earlier that day, and we discussed the merits of his adidas blue mixed with brown colour combination. Although it reminded me of my dad for some reason i said, the Monkey pulled it off.
I didn’t tell you about my wierd voodoo Oscar moment; we watched it after our gig in Annapolis, and just as Jennifer Garner stepped out, i said “wouldn’t it be awful if she fell over”, and whoop!! She skidded arse over tit, narrowly avoiding full face plant. The boys all jumped off the couch screaming and said they’d tie stones to my toes and throw me in the nearest pond.
Must skidaddle. Mexican to eat, Margaritas to drink, momentous noise to be made.
Love KT x
Ps. It’s Sammy boy’s birthday today! Ooh, tis gonna be painful to be filmed at 10am tomorrow morning… -

Beep beep peeps,
Can’t tell you how glad i am to be able to say, i’m sitting on my tour bus writing from Nashville, Tennessee!! Hoop- la! It’s a bit of a dream come true to play a sell-out show here…a city that’s bombarded with music day in, day out, that’s full of great musicians. I played an instore at Borders bookshop and even that felt like a privelege; not just Borders, Borders NASHVILLE baby!
Carey Brothers who’s supporting us this tour is from here & has promised a tour after the gig. He says that the closing times are staggered so you can pretty much go from bluegrass bar to hillbilly joint & see how long you last.
Also, an old friend, Charlie Mars who supported us back in January lives here and has stolen the boys away for a spin in his band van. It may be a solo show after all…Next i’ll see of them they’ll be playing full pelt blugrass with Charlie at the Grand Ole Opry. They’d look good in the oufits though don’t you think? Come on, redneck Arnie?
So we got to Atlanta yesterday, and our tour manager gets a phone call to say someone would like to come and say hello during soundcheck at 6 o clock. Sure as the night is dark, 6pm comes around and who walks in with his band?
SIR BLOODY ELTON JOHN!!!!!! (we shall now have a couple of lines of silence in respect of overwhelming awe.)
Wow. What a lovely man. He’d said some great things about my album in the US press a year ago, and i’d always wanted to thank him for that. He was sooo easy to talk to and stuck around for about 40 minutes. We were chatting about being blessed with enjoying a nomadic life. How hard it would be to do this for a living if you didn’t like sleeping in a little box on a bus…He was also telling me he’d released in the region of 15 albums in his first 5 years of recording. Now THAT’S how to do it!!
Must run, but big love and a slap of y’alls thighs from the home of country music.
